Protecting Yourself and Your Property

Repeated and long-term exposure to asbestos can cause everything from fluid buildup around the lungs to mesothelioma. At ASAP Environmental Inc, we provide asbestos inspections in Boston, MA and throughout New England in order to help identify these harmful fibers and notify you of any potential risks.

Where Can Asbestos Be Found?

Although building materials that contain asbestos have been seldom used in construction since the late 1980s, these materials are still legal to sell in the United States. Asbestos can be found in structures of all ages and in various forms, including decorative plasters, fireproofing, resilient flooring, heating system insulation, wallboard joint compound systems, roofing, and exterior siding.

Pre-Abatement Asbestos Inspection

If you suspect asbestos was used in a building that will be undergoing demolition or renovation, you must have an asbestos inspection to thoroughly inspect the building and its components before the work can begin. The inspection report will identify the presence, location, amount, and condition of asbestos in the areas that will be affected by the impending project.

Asbestos Abatement

In the state of Massachusetts, when a project involves asbestos abatement, removal, or disposal, the Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the Department of Labor Standards (DLS) must be notified at least 10 working days prior to the start of the project. You should also check with the board of health, building inspector, and fire department in the town or city that the building is located in order to notify them or obtain all necessary local approvals before starting the demolition or renovation.

Inspection and Post-Abatement

Once asbestos abatement activities have been completed, a visual inspection must be performed by an asbestos project monitor. This process will include the visual inspection of all surfaces within the work area. If any visible debris is found in the area, it will have to be repeatedly cleaned by the asbestos contractor until the debris is no longer visible.

Asbestos Disposal

There is only one Massachusetts landfill currently permitted to accept asbestos-containing waste: the Waste Management Fitchburg/Westminster Sanitary Landfill. The landfill can be reached at (800) 963-4779.

There are two landfills in states bordering Massachusetts that are permitted to accept asbestos-containing waste generated in Massachusetts. They are the Waste Management Turnkey Landfill, which can be reached at (800) 963-4776 and RED Transfer & Logistics, which can be reached at (860) 342-1022.

If you are about to begin a demolition or renovation project and you suspect that asbestos may be present in the building materials, call ASAP Environmental Inc at (800) 960-2982 to speak with one of our team members and request an inspection. You may also feel free to schedule an inspection online.
